Siding, gutters and outdoor structures decide where the rain goes
A house exterior is a water system before it is a finish. Siding sheds the rain that runs down the wall. Gutters catch what the roof sheds and carry it to a downspout. A porch cover or a deck adds new surfaces that also have to shed water, and every one of them meets the house at a joint. When those parts work together, water leaves the property. When one fails, the water finds the next weak spot.
In Northwest Arkansas a single storm can bring hail, wind and hard rain in the same afternoon, so the exterior takes the punishment first. Exterior remodeling sits at the wall on the path of water, after the roof and the eave and before the floor and the framing below.

Iron Shield’s exterior remodeling comes in two lines. The first is gutter and siding installation: custom gutters with leaf guards, and vinyl, fiber cement or engineered wood siding, on replacements and on new builds. The second is outdoor structures: porch covers, decks, balconies and patios, along with pergolas, patio covers and carports.
The two lines share one job, which is keeping water off the wall and away from the foundation. A gutter that overflows onto a new deck ruins the deck. A deck ledger bolted over failed siding lets water into the rim of the house. That is why the two are best planned together.
Chapter 03
Plan the exterior with the roof, not after it
Edges are where roofs, walls and gutters meet, and edges are where water gets in.
The drip edge has to lap into the gutter, the fascia has to be sound enough to hold it, and the flashing where a roof meets a wall has to tuck behind the siding, not sit on top of it. Those details are easiest to get right when one contractor can see all of them.

Most exterior problems begin at the gutter line, where a sagging run or a clogged outlet sends water down the siding instead of away from the house. If that is what you are looking at, begin with the gutters and the wall behind them.
