The storm ends and the damage keeps moving
Water does not stop when the rain does. It follows gravity and wicking through drywall, framing, insulation and flooring, and a stain on the living room ceiling is often the last place a leak shows itself. The first day decides how much of the house can be dried and kept, and how much has to come out.
That is why restoration starts with stopping the source and opening what is wet, not with paint. A hole in the roof gets covered, standing water gets pulled out, and materials that hold moisture get dried or removed before mold has anything to grow on.
Every hour the structure stays wet, the list of things that can be saved gets shorter. Carpet pad, insulation and soaked drywall go first. Framing and subfloor can usually be dried in place if the work starts soon enough.

Water from a burst pipe, a failed appliance, a flood or a roof leak is a water damage call. A musty smell, dark growth on a wall or ceiling, or a damp basement points to mold. Smoke and soot, or a roof and structure hit by wind and hail, make it a fire and storm call. Plenty of jobs are two or three of these at once.
